The short answer

What is gas cooker and hob relocation?

Gas cooker or hob relocation means moving the gas supply point to a new position and reconnecting your appliance there. It involves new pipework from the existing supply, a new isolation valve and connection, capping the old point, a tightness test and a safety certificate. It is different from a like-for-like swap, where the gas point stays where it is (see gas hob replacement and gas cooker installation).

By law this work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, with pipework to BS 6891. Unregistered work risks gas leaks, carbon monoxide and invalid home insurance.

How it works

Gas cooker relocation step by step

  1. Send photos. WhatsApp the current and new position.
  2. Confirm the price. £300 labour, materials quoted at cost.
  3. Isolate and disconnect. Supply isolated, appliance disconnected.
  4. Run new pipework. New pipe, isolation valve and connection point at the new position.
  5. Cap the old point. Sealed and tested.
  6. Test and certify. Tightness test, combustion and flame failure checks, then your free Gas Safe certificate.

A short move usually takes 2 to 4 hours.

What we check

Technical rules we follow on every relocation

  • Pipe sizing. A longer run can lose pressure in 15mm pipe, so we check the gas rate and upsize to 22mm where needed.
  • Pipe route. Routed where it can be protected and inspected, in line with BS 6891, not buried unprotected.
  • Isolation valve. Fitted where you can reach it.
  • Flexible connector. A BS 669 compliant connector within the manufacturer's length limit.
  • Ventilation and clearances. Checked against Building Regulations Part J, including distance to the hood and worktops.
  • Stability chain and flame failure device. Fitted and tested on every burner.
  • Gas tightness test. Manometer test on the new and the capped pipework.

Landlords and leaseholders: our certificate is valid for CP12 records. In a flat, check your lease or ask the freeholder before pipework is changed. See gas safety certificates.

FAQ

Gas cooker and hob relocation London: questions answered

How much does gas cooker relocation cost in London? +
£300 labour plus materials at cost. The materials figure depends on the length of the new pipe run and is confirmed before work starts.
Can I move a gas cooker myself? +
No. Moving gas pipework must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. DIY work is illegal and dangerous.
How long does it take? +
A short relocation usually takes 2 to 4 hours. Longer runs or awkward access take longer.
Can you move a gas hob to a kitchen island? +
Yes, if a safe pipe route exists. We assess the floor type first. Worktop cutting is done by your kitchen fitter.
Will the pipe need upsizing? +
Sometimes. Long runs from the meter can need 22mm pipe to keep gas pressure correct. We check this before quoting.
What happens to the old gas point? +
It is capped, tested and left safe. Making good plaster, tiles or flooring is not included.
Do I get a Gas Safe certificate? +
Yes, free, after the tightness test and safety checks. It is valid for landlord records.
Is same day relocation available? +
Often, subject to availability. WhatsApp before noon with photos.
