Gas hob replacement in London — everything you need to know

Replacing a gas hob in London is one of the most common kitchen appliance jobs we carry out. Replacing a gas hob — the professional process

Here is exactly what happens during a professional gas hob replacement in London:

1. Gas supply isolated — the engineer turns off the gas supply at the bayonet fitting or mains stopcock before any work begins
2. Old hob disconnected — the flexible gas connector (hose) is disconnected from the bayonet fitting and the old hob is lifted clear of the worktop
3. Worktop cutout checked — the dimensions of the existing cutout are measured and compared to the new hob. If the new hob is larger, the cutout is carefully enlarged
4. New flexible connector fitted — a new BS 669 compliant corrugated stainless steel flexible connector is always used when replacing a gas hob. Reusing an old rubber hose is non-compliant and dangerous
5. New hob installed and connected — the new hob is positioned, sealed and connected to the gas supply via the bayonet fitting
6. Gas tightness test carried out — using specialist pressure testing equipment, the engineer verifies there are no gas leaks at any connection point
7. Burners and flame failure devices tested — all burners are lit and the FFD safety devices are tested to confirm they cut the gas supply when the flame is extinguished
8. Gas Safe certificate issued — an official certificate is issued confirming the replacement is safe, legal and fully compliant

Sometimes you do not need a full replacement — you simply need your existing gas hob disconnected and reconnected. This is common when having a new kitchen worktop fitted, when moving home, or when a kitchen fitter needs the hob removed temporarily. However, a 5 burner hob is usually wider than a standard 4 burner, which means your existing worktop cutout may need enlarging.
