Gas hob replacement in London — everything you need to know
Replacing a gas hob in London is one of the most common kitchen appliance jobs we carry out. Whether your existing hob has stopped working, you are upgrading to a newer model, or you are renovating your kitchen entirely, our Gas Safe registered engineers handle every stage of the gas hob replacement process — from safely disconnecting and removing your old hob to fitting, testing and certifying your new one.
By UK law under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, all gas hob disconnection, reconnection and installation work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. This applies equally to replacing a gas hob as it does to a first-time installation. Attempting to change a gas hob yourself — even simply disconnecting the flexible connector — is illegal, dangerous and will invalidate your home insurance.
Our gas hob replacement service in London covers three scenarios: a direct like-for-like swap where the new hob is the same size as the old one, a replacement where the new hob is larger and requires hole enlargement in the worktop, and cases where the new hob is in a different position and requires new gas pipework. We also offer standalone old hob removal for just £25 — useful when you are having a new kitchen fitted and need the old hob disconnected and taken away before the fitters arrive.
When should you replace a gas hob in London?
There are several clear signs that it is time to replace rather than repair your gas hob:
- One or more burners no longer ignite — if cleaning the burner caps and checking the ignition electrode does not fix the problem, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair
- Persistent gas smell — if you can smell gas near the hob when it is not in use, turn off the gas supply immediately and call a Gas Safe engineer. This can indicate a failing flexible connector or internal valve
- Cracked or shattered glass — gas-on-glass hobs with a cracked glass panel should be replaced, not repaired
- Upgrading to a new model — moving from a standard cast iron hob to a gas-on-glass design, or upgrading from a 4 burner to a 5 burner gas hob for more cooking capacity
- Kitchen renovation — if you are having a new kitchen fitted, the worktop change often requires the hob to be disconnected, removed and refitted in the new position
- Hob is over 10 years old — older gas hobs may not have modern safety features such as flame failure devices (FFD) which automatically cut the gas supply if the flame goes out
Replacing a gas hob — the professional process
Here is exactly what happens during a professional gas hob replacement in London:
- Gas supply isolated — the engineer turns off the gas supply at the bayonet fitting or mains stopcock before any work begins
- Old hob disconnected — the flexible gas connector (hose) is disconnected from the bayonet fitting and the old hob is lifted clear of the worktop
- Worktop cutout checked — the dimensions of the existing cutout are measured and compared to the new hob. If the new hob is larger, the cutout is carefully enlarged
- New flexible connector fitted — a new BS 669 compliant corrugated stainless steel flexible connector is always used when replacing a gas hob. Reusing an old rubber hose is non-compliant and dangerous
- New hob installed and connected — the new hob is positioned, sealed and connected to the gas supply via the bayonet fitting
- Gas tightness test carried out — using specialist pressure testing equipment, the engineer verifies there are no gas leaks at any connection point
- Burners and flame failure devices tested — all burners are lit and the FFD safety devices are tested to confirm they cut the gas supply when the flame is extinguished
- Gas Safe certificate issued — an official certificate is issued confirming the replacement is safe, legal and fully compliant
Gas hob disconnect and reconnect in London
Sometimes you do not need a full replacement — you simply need your existing gas hob disconnected and reconnected. This is common when having a new kitchen worktop fitted, when moving home, or when a kitchen fitter needs the hob removed temporarily. Our gas hob disconnect and reconnect service costs the same as a standard installation — from £100 — and always includes a new BS 669 compliant flexible connector and gas tightness test on reconnection.
Changing a gas hob — 4 burner vs 5 burner
One of the most common reasons for changing a gas hob in London is upgrading from a 4 burner to a 5 burner model. A 5 burner gas hob provides an additional central wok burner — typically the highest powered burner on the hob — which is ideal for stir-frying, boiling large volumes of water quickly, and high-heat cooking. However, a 5 burner hob is usually wider than a standard 4 burner, which means your existing worktop cutout may need enlarging. Our engineers carry out hole enlargement as part of the replacement at a fixed price of £180 — no separate charges.
If you are not sure which hob to buy, our partner store Euro Appliances stocks both 4 burner and 5 burner gas hobs for London customers. See the section below for more information.
